Default trivial wiper question

The factory wipers on my car were covered with some kind of rubber/vinyl boot along the back of the blades. I thought it was odd, but didn't think too much about it.

I got new blades at the 7500 mile dealer service. I just noticed that the new blades don't have it--they look just like normal wipers.

They seem to wipe just the same. What's the point of the boot--anybody know?

I could be wrong. Winter blade. Keeps ice from building up on blade.

Yes! Good thought, oldbiker. I googled, and learned that as well as what a beam wiper is--never heard of one.

I live in a fairly mild climate, so I don't think I'm going to miss the rubber boots.

Did your wipers make noise (no matter if they had been changed out for new blades)? That was something else that added up to my disillusionment
