according to the k900 Facebook group, this update only changes the map and does not give you the cooperate purple screens. I haven't seen it yet so cant verify that

When I was in for service, I asked about the update e-mail I questioned in another thread.

https://www.k900forum.com/forum/new-...ia-email-5773/

It was legit--attached is a screenshot of the important part.

I've just finished the download and update process on my nav, going from the link in the email. Here's how it went.

I should say right off that I have kind of a clunky DSL connection. I've been told I'm at the end of the loop. So things will go quicker if you have a better connection.

The program doesn't actually run from the web link. You have to download an executable file from there and then run it on your computer. That part went pretty fast. (That's often how malware gets in, but I figured Kia could be trusted, so I did it.)

On opening the program, it looks at first like you have to choose your update via software version, etc., which I wasn't sure about, but actually it just let me choose by car, so that I could remember!

The data download was taking forever, so I just left it running and went to bed. Next AM, it was done. Then I set it to copying to the SD card. That went slow too, possibly because my computer has no card slot and I had to buy an adapter to plug into a USB port. It insists on formatting the card, although I thought I was being clever by having already formatted it. It was all looking like taking forever, so I left it running and went to work. That afternoon it was done.

At the car, it says put the new card in before doing anything else, so I did and started the engine. I had printed out instructions on which screens to choose, etc., but didn't need them. The system recognized the new card right away and started updating. It took about an hour. It didn't give that alarming message about draining the battery, which often pops up, but I let the engine idle anyway just to be sure.

I haven't really used it yet, but just saw a couple of small changes. It marks my favorite radio stations with a star now, and it say UVO in really tiny type at the top.

Here's the FAQ page on updates, which I hadn't been aware of before I got the e-mail:

BTW, I saw instructions along the way for loading data on USB drives, so I think it's the same process on systems that use those.

Hope this helps some of you guys!

I've been out on a road trip, which was the impetus to upate the navigation system in the first place.

The most conspicuous change I found was that it now attempts to tell you exactly what businesses you'll find at each exit--picture attached.

This is good and bad. It's good when you can figure out the little bitty icons and they're accurate. It's bad when you have no idea what the idea is and there doesn't seem to be anything on the roadside signs that matches up.

If you don't need the detail, you can turn it off and just see the major turns coming up on your route. On the whole, a quirky but occasionally useful change.
